My Project

Working with Mildly Intellectually Disabled (MID) students can be challenging for the teacher and peers but mainly the student suffering with it the disability. Many of my students stay in the same classroom the majority of the day which can cause anxiety, lack of focus and unbecoming behaviors. This project will help alleviate a lot of these disabilities, such as bands around the bottom of their chairs to kick to help with excessive energy without disrupting the class or chair balls for those who find it helpful to move around to focus, sensory fidget bracelets or toys for calming and stress relief. There will also be activities such as board games and floor puzzles that will promote social skills, group play and team building. There will also be activities that will promote coping and self regulating skills such coloring, legos and kinetic sand to name a few. All of these skills will help with lowering negative behaviors and periods of meltdowns due to long periods of instruction in one classroom.
