My Project

I teach students with Autism from grades 3-6. Most of my students have sensory needs to help them balance their day and focus on instruction. A calming space within the classroom allows students to self-soothe and address their sensory diets within the classroom and ensures more focus and attention throughout their learning.

Specific items such as fidget tools, kinetic sand, a soft and cuddly bean bag, and other tactile tools will help students take their calming break or sensory break before returning to their daily schedule with full focus and engagement.

Calming breaks are also a way for students to identify when they have strong emotions and need to engage in appropriate calming-down strategies, which they can do using Twist and Turns and sensory discs.

In addition, in our class, we focus on communication and social-emotional learning. Students with Autism often have difficulty with communication, expressing, and identifying their feelings. SEL teaching materials will help students engage in active learning and role-playing in the classroom. This will help students to have healthy relationships with peers.
