Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Our school serves 400 elementary students who are eager to learn and explore through music. We serve kindergarten through sixth grade students who spent the majority of last year in distance learning. We are returning to school 100% face to face, looking forward to learn and grow with each other in a safe learning environment.
The student population is diverse and full of students who are excited to create, perform and connect in the music classroom.
We strive to provide an active music education program that promotes creativity, teamwork, cooperation, and social-emotional development.
Offering creative outlets provides balance to all ages - at home, work, and in the community. Music education has a tremendous impact on students' academic, social and emotional well-being. Students' music experiences remain with them as adults and they truly enrich their lives.
My Project
To start off music class, we spend 3 minutes practicing mindfulness by doing a body scan. This helps prepare students to focus on the present moment, breathing in and out and being aware of what is going on in front of them, here and now. It is amazing to see how relaxed students are at the end of the body scan, as well as present in the classroom, ready to learn.
Calm classroom materials will provide all students with tools they can use to practice mindfulness every day.
We have been faced with many challenges as a community, and we can strengthen our wellness and resilience through mindfulness. My hope is not only to enrich student lives through music lessons, but insert short practice mindful practices to start music classes to build a daily habit of being mindful.
