This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I am honored to make the leap from 5th grade to first! I have the opportunity to use my strengths in the classroom with primary students. As I look at the rising first graders, I understand how the coronavirus and extended quarantines have negatively impacted the youngest students in our building. Primary students lack the appropriate social skills (good manners, taking turns, and following directions), interpersonal skills (verbal and non-verbal communication, problem solving, and good decision making), and intrapersonal skills (empathy, cooperation, and active listening) needed to flourish as a member of their community and as a student in, oft times, very full classroom. The liquid floor tiles will give students permission to use their energy (age appropriate) to line up and transition (teacher goal). The tilt and turn sensory liquid windows will more than likely be placed at each student table. After modeling, I see the sensory windows as a calming device for children having calming or tantrum concerns. My goal for the light changing center is to have the week's class leader change the color to indicate our next transition. The power pen and math cards offer students immediate feedback as they practice math facts as part of their independent work time.
The sensory and math materials I am requesting will establish a peaceful, yet engaging classroom community where effective instruction can take place.
