My Project

Students today seem to be struggling more than ever with big emotions and learning to control those emotions. The COVID-19 pandemic seemed to increase the overall stress and anxiety that students face and the re-introduction to full time in person school has proven to be exceptionally tough for some. Young people have always had difficulty managing their strong emotions but this struggle has drastically increased in the last several years. In the school setting we continue to see students with emotional outbursts, lack of self regulation skills, and increase worry and anxiety. It is essential that students learn, and be given helpful to tools to learn, regulate their emotions. Students particularly like to hold tactile objects to assist them in calming down, focusing, and re-centering themselves. Textured strips, such as the ones I am requested through this project, help students calm down by not only using their touch sense to assist them in calming down but the directions on the strips also teach them necessary breathing techniques that they can utilize for self regulation. These sensory strips may be a small tool but they are mighty when it comes to helping students stay calm, focused, and ready to learn.
