Over the years, as I've taught third through fifth grade in a Title One public school, I've noticed that students have become engulfed in the world of video games. They've forgotten about the communities and world around them. They've also forgotten how to treat each other; bullying became a big part of the school. Last year, I taught a diverse group of fifth graders and through my lessons, I introduced them to a world they almost forgot-the one they live in everyday. We talked and wrote about topics in our community and world that they wanted to change, or help change. It was an ongoing project from day one. At the end of the year, the students could identify injustices around them and would brainstorm what they could do to help. We even did our part to help families in poverty-stricken countries by raising and donating money. This is the premise for the Philanthropy Club, I'd like to start, for fourth and fifth graders at my school. The students would meet with me and a few other volunteer teachers during lunch two times a week to talk about issues they want to change. The books on the wish list are ones that will help the students get started. The notebooks and folders are where they are going to keep their ideas and the poster boards and markers are for posters they will make to advertise the topic the topic they want to change. By helping us, you'll help us begin to change the world. Remember...it only takes one.
