My Students

My students are immersed in a reading and writing program that affords them the opportunity to read a lot of personally chosen books. I work with many voracious readers... and some are a bit more reluctant.

Like J.K.

Rowling once said, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book." I take that quote and run with it to find books for kids who love sports, kids who love art, kids who love camping, kids who love gaming, and any other "loves" they may have.

My Project

As with many things in life, having the power of choice results in higher engagement and enthusiasm for tasks. If given an option, it's much more likely that a student will choose to read on their own. This project was designed to bring some books based on video games into our classroom. Some written by actual gaming personas--like PopularMMOs! In addition to gamers, the Zach King series was written by the popular vine-creator and digital media star.

Some normally reluctant students who are self-proclaimed gamers will be able to immerse themselves in the types of environments that they see in popular video games and engage with the writing of some of their favorite gamer personas.

These books will be a springboard for future book clubs and possible read alouds.
