My Students

I teach at a school that focuses on working with students with moderate to severe disabilities which include intellectual and physical delays. I work with young adults who are graduating or will be continuing on for one more school year. They have unique personalities and learn at varying degrees. It is vital that we provide a classroom that is versatile, yet dynamic. We are constantly devising new ways to spark the students’ interests and creativity.

My students are amazing young adults who are eager and ready to learn.

Daily activities include basic living skills such as cooking, job skills, and cleaning. Academically, we focus on learning money skills, telling time, reading and verbal comprehension and writing.

We also try to keep our students healthy with our Physical Education classes. We walk the track and have music and movement breaks daily. Throughout the course of the year our class participates in swimming, bicycle riding, bowling, basketball and therapeutic horseback riding.

My Project

The raised planter beds will enable my students to plant flowers that will attract pollinators to our garden. Pollinator gardens support and maintain pollinators by supplying food in the form of pollen and nectar that will ensure that these important animals stay in the area to keep pollinating our crops for continued vegetable production.

An upgrade to our outdoor garden will give my students a chance to expand our gardening efforts which will allow them to use our harvest for our cooking classes and craft projects.

My class is so thankful for a strong and supportive community. We are looking forward to furthering our garden lessons.
