Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are faced with many challenges on a daily basis. The school is in a low-income neighborhood. The majority of the students in my class are Latino. Some do not speak English but are very eager to learn. It is an inclusion classroom. This means there are general education students and students with various special needs. They all struggle with reading.

How do you encourage kids to read if the books you have available are not appropriate to their level?

I have found that the kids in my class enjoy going to the classroom library. Ninety-percent of the books we currently have are too difficult for them. They love books and are captivated when being read to. My goal is to keep this love of books and wanting to read throughout their lives.

My Project

The books requested will be a much needed addition to our classroom library. Students will be able to choose books on their level to practice reading in class and at home with their family. Some students will be able to choose books in their native language with the addition of Spanish books.

Let your love of books be passed on to the students in my classroom.

They will be exposed to many different authors and hopefully make connections to the stories they read. The books will increase their reading fluency and comprehension. Increases in these areas will ultimately impact their achievements in other academic areas!
