Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes. They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.

My students are active and enthusiastic.

They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.

Our school is in a high needs, high poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities and are always striving to be, and do, better for themselves and for others.

My Project

Many of my students come from immigrant families. For many, English is not spoken at home. With the current political climate, many of my students have expressed fears of how being an immigrant further alienates them from society at large. They are fearful of the stereotypes that are being presented about what it means to be an English language learner, what it means to be Mexican, Dominican, what it means to be different.

My students want their voices to be heard.

They want to present their experiences and that of their families and the sacrifices that take place every day in their households. They want to present the struggles of being a student not just from immigrant families but also students that struggle in the classroom due to ADHD, bullying, and other issues that distract them from learning.

These resources will allow students to record not only their words, but also provide a call to action to some of the issues that they are dealing with on a daily basis.

The Chromebook along with the headphones will allow students to develop 21st-century skills to record, edit, revise, publish, and share their fears, hopes, and call to action with the creation of their very own podcasts and/or video. The books will provide students more information in an accessible way to a topic that they are experiencing and want to know more about. Through the use of these tools they will be engaging in STEM learning as well as learning to advocate for themselves and those around them.
