This year I would like to allow my students to take a break and learn how to self-regulate. Many kindergarteners come to school with fear and anxiety about what school will be like. These are big emotions for little minds to understand and work through. My goal for this project is to create an area students can visit when their emotions are escalated. We have a calming corner but need a few more items to help regulate emotions. Three of the items that I have requested are emotional sensory bottles. Students or I can grab a bottle related to a specific emotion, turn it over, and talk about our feelings. These timers will be used to help de-escalate students so that they can then return to learning. Sometimes, students are unsure of their emotions, and if this happens, they can grab a seasonal timer to help them de-escalate. The sensory texture mats, the squishy stress balls, and the sensory fidgets will be used in the calming corner to help de-escalate when students need more of a tactile approach.
Calhoun's Calming Corner will be a safe place in the classroom where young minds can feel comfortable in their new learning environment.
The tools provided in this project are essential to helping my students learn to cope with their ever-changing feelings and the world around them.
