Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

More parents are coming to our school library before and after classes. They want to check out picture books that they can share with their young kids at home. We are running short of good picture books. Please help us acquire some great picture books that our families can share.

Some of our kids may not have a lot of reading material at home.

That's what makes this project so important. The kids in our South Florida school tend to be first generation Americans. Their parents come from the Caribbean and Central / South America. Over 4/5 of our children receive free reduced-price lunch because their parents are in straitened financial circumstances.

My Project

It is heartwarming to see our moms and dads visit the school library every morning. They really want their kids to get on, and they know how important it is that the children develop a love for reading. As the school librarian, I would love to have more quality books to offer these parents. What better way to entice young kids into reading than through picture books? And the very best picture books are the winners of the Caldecott Medal. This project features 21 Caldecott Medal winners. The books come from a company that specializes in library books. That means that the books will come barcoded and ready to check out. It also means that they will be tough and long-lasting. These books should appeal to children in Kindergarten and grades 1-3. In our school, that's some 400 kids.

The moms and dads who visit our library every day really want their kids to learn to read well and to get ahead.

Let's help them. Let's offer our families the best: 21 Caldecott Medal books.
