Calculators—A Necessary Tool

Help me give my students scientific calculators. My students do real-world math problems every day and need calculators to do them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has a very diverse population both ethnically and economically, with many of them coming from low income families. In fact, over half of them qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school culture is focused upon respect for every student and toward learning. I have found most of my students, even those who do not like math and science, to really enjoy taking physics and to get more excited about science as well as the why and how things in the world work. They also see the applications of the mathematics that they have been taking.

My students are taking on a challenging class in physics that integrates science and math together and has them look at the world in a more logical and scientific way.

With the new state standards of NGSS, our entire population will be taking physics. This is a difficult course for them as it has them developing their critical-thinking skills more than they ever have before. Most of the students end up very successful in this class and it also is one of the best courses to prepare them for moving on to college.

My Project

The students do calculations every day in physics using real-world numbers such as times off of a stop watch or distances between planets. A good number of my students cannot afford a calculator in order to do these. They also use them to follow along with me during sample problems and on tests. The biggest struggle is during testing: if the student does not have access to a calculator, the test becomes much more difficult or would take them much longer to finish. Even after borrowing calculators from other teachers, I have had to have students share calculators during tests. This is difficult as I have to make sure that it is cleared out every time that is is passed between the students. These calculators would give every student a more equal opportunity to be successful.
