Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I use a calculator almost daily. Using a calculator is not always a crutch. It is a skill, and my sixth grade students would benefit from calculator practice.

My students make up a spirited group of twelve boys in a self-contained classroom for students with emotional disturbance and learning disabilities.

All of my students are unique and possess so many talents. Most of my students are performing several grades below grade level and have limited experience with calculators.

My Project

With a class set of calculators, my students will be able to perform more complex and grade level appropriate calculations. Also, strategic use of calculators will allow students to concentrate on higher-order concepts, skills, and problem solving strategies.

Many of my students have experienced academic failures, which have resulted in learned-helplessness.

I teach my students how to be more self-reliant. As a result, students are experiencing more academic success and greater confidence. Calculators, when used appropriately, will further increase student independence with mathematics in the near future and for the rest of their lives.
