Calculators for the Inquiry Based Classroom!

My students need 30 TI-Nspire calculators, 3 charging stations, and Texas Instruments Nspire Navigator data system, so they can more effectively visualize mathematics, and monitor their learning.

My Students

My students are curious digital natives. They understand the power of technology, and have high expectations for the technology they use. I want them to be able to explore a mathematical phenomena in a dynamic, efficient and clear context, but our old graphing calculators just aren't cutting it.

M.

and S. College Prep is an inquiry-based, STEM school. Most of our students are enrolled in an engineering academy, designed to make them better problem solvers, and to prep them for a college major and/or career choice in a science, technology, engineering, or a math-related field. They've been through campus changes, scheduling changes, and teacher changes, yet they still make big strides in learning. They're used to adapting and "making it work," but their hard work deserves some reward and attention.

My Project

Students come to class every day ready to explore a new concept. Since our curriculum is inquiry based, students investigate a concept or a problem before it is taught. This process depends heavily on resources, and our current calculators often cause misconceptions, making it really frustrating to inquire about something new. One common student comment is "Mrs. R, why is my graph not curved?" Some students will respond, "The graph is curved, it's just not HD, it's from the olden days!" This new set of calculators and navigator software will help students visualize mathematical phenomena more dynamically and precisely. The software will connect the students' calculators to my computer, helping me determine which students need more support or help clear up any misconceptions.

Integrating greater technology will make my classroom a more modern and exciting place to learn.

Having these calculators will help my students become more persevering, resourceful mathematicians, who are willing to attack any problem without fear of failure.
