This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Public schools are always underestimating the need for calculators in the science classroom. Think about all the time we can save if we had calculators readily available in our classroom.

My students are 100% ELL's where some are also SIFE.

They struggle to learn English on a daily basis. Not only is English a major problem, but Math and doing basic calculations is a HUGE issue. As a science teacher, I must incorporate both subjects in my lessons.

My Project

Because many of my students have had an interrupted education. Many of them are missing the basic math skills necessary to pass science class. They are so dependent on calculators that basic calculations become very time consuming and the students do not get the content they need to pass the state exam. As we progress in the year, we will be doing more and more calculations with percentages and analyzing statistical data on the environment.

Having a calculator for each student would allow each student to learn to use different formulas as well as require them to be more independent learners.

In addition, we would have much more time to learn the content and get the answers as to why the numbers are the way they are.
