"The wonders of the world can be experienced through education." -- Unknown
I am a first grade teacher and I have just begun my journey as a teacher in the Hawaii Public School System.
Many of my students come from military families and are children of men and women faithfully serving our country. I work on a grade level team with 4 other teachers. Together we teach approximately 100 students. Our students are great and love to learn more and more every day. At our school, we want all of our students to be successful. We work daily, to teach our students academic skills, emotional skills, and skills to survive in the world today. We try to make all learning valuable and meaningful for our students. More calculators would be very beneficial for our students and would allow for all of our students to use them without having to rotate and share daily.
My Project
In the classroom today, we are trying to teach our students to be valuable citizens in our society. With our calculators, we will be learning about mathematics in the real world. We hope to teach our students about economic interdependence, allowing them to experience how people trade or use money to obtain goods and services. We will be conducting a community service project, in which the students will collect recyclable cans and bottles to raise money to purchase non-perishable food items for the Hawaii Food Bank. Once they have sorted their recyclables, they will be able to use their calculators to figure out how much money earned each day. Once the recyclables are turned in and all the money is collected, the students will be able to use their calculators and grocery store ads to develop a shopping list. Students will learn about the use of mathematics when purchasing goods from the grocery store. We will purchase non-perishable food items and donate them to the Hawaii Food Bank.
These calculators will allow all of our students to participate during class time, without having to share or rotate as we do in our current situation.
With this project, students will learn about mathematics, caring for our environment, and the importance of making a difference in our community. Beyond this project, many students in the years to come will be able to use these calculators and experience how mathematics is useful in the world today. We thank you, in advance, for your kind heart.
