Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Social studies has always been my passion. Throughout my whole life, I have loved learning about distant and faraway lands. I have seen that students also love being taken to faraway places without leaving their seats.

My students are mainly ninth and tenth grade English language learners from Latin America and the Middle East.

Despite coming from all over the globe, they have arrived with very little knowledge of the lands that previously surrounded them. I am hoping to open them up to the world around them and in the process, make the world seem smaller and friendlier to them. My school is in a working-class community in Northern New Jersey.

I am also the coach of Academic Decathlon, composed of thirty-five students who compete against other schools in tests of knowledge, public speaking, and writing. We meet every Monday and Thursday for practice.

My Project

My students need TI-84 calculators for our Academic Decathlon program. These calculators would be used for our competitions in the Mathematics category. With permutations and combinations being the focus of the Mathematics segment, the calculators will help immensely.

My students work hard and many come from working class families.

Despite the odds, I had five of my 18 Decathletes gain acceptance to Ivy League schools. We would like more of these kids to have a chance at an Ivy League education. Giving the students the tools they need to compete will go a long way. I humbly ask that you donate to my project.
