Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The number of students taking AP Calculus has rapidly grown from 30 students four years ago to 98 students this year. Not every student has access to a graphing calculator outside the classroom, yet it is an essential tool for success when they take their AP exams in May.

My AP Calculus AB and BC students have helped change the culture of mathematics learning at our school.

In four years, the number of students taking Advanced Placement math courses has more than tripled. This has been the result of student demand for more opportunities to advance academically, particularly in mathematics. Many of the students have worked extremely hard to even make it to calculus in high school. A large number of my students have taken at least one, if not multiple, summer courses ranging from Algebra 1, Geometry and Pre-Calculus in order to challenge themselves and qualify to take AP Calculus. What sets my calculus students apart from most others in my district is the diversity. Approximately half of my AP students are Latino or from other underrepresented minorities in advanced classes. They have challenged the traditional stereotype of who should strive to be a successful AP Calculus student at our school.

My Project

The resource that I am requesting is a set of 13 TI-Nspire CAS calculators. These calculators are one of the most powerful and technologically advanced tools available. What makes them so amazing is that they run a Computer Algebra Systems (CAS), which puts the computational abilities and features of a computer-based math program in the hands of the students. In my classroom, I use collaborative learning extensively. With these calculators, each group of students will have access to at least one of these mini-computers. The availability will help students better explore the different conceptual and computational aspects of calculus. The calculators will help to supplement their algebraic skills by allowing students to easily check their work, explore relations of functions by being able to physically manipulate graphs with their fingertips, and increase their fluency with the most advanced and current technology available.

Many of my students choose to take calculus in high school because they are interested in pursuing college majors and careers in S.T.E.M.

fields. By making the availability of these calculators a reality in my classroom will help expose my students to the most recent and powerful technology available. When I first used the TI-Nspire CAS graphing calculators, my mind was blown by every feature and capability. I want my students to have that same opportunity and experience as they learn calculus.
