My Students

My chemistry students at Miami Central Senior High School are inquisitive, intelligent, and dedicated. With the right motivation and guidance, they are eager to learn more about the natural world. My biggest goal as an educator is to not only teach my students chemistry, but to also inspire them to become leaders in the field. This past year, a student expressed to me that he was considering being a chemistry major in college. Another student shared she never started liking science until taking my class. Surprisingly, a majority of my students said stoichiometry was their favorite unit!

The students I interact with every day of the school year are the future leaders of tomorrow.

They are an underrepresented group in the sciences and deserve for their ideas to be heard. Throughout this upcoming year, I want them to be able to confidently navigate chemical concepts and apply them to the real world. I want their curiosities to grow, their math skills to develop, and their confidence to flourish. Chemistry is no easy feat, but it is an amazing subject that can be successfully taught with the right resources, projects, and carefully crafted lesson plans.

My Project

At the end of this past school year, my students swore to me that chemistry is just the study of math. However, I believe chemistry is more than various mathematical calculations. Chemistry is the basis of life and explains the everyday experiences of my students. As a teacher at an underserved and high needs school, it has been difficult to obtain the resources my students need to feel confident in chemistry. With the help of calculators and hands-on activities, my students will be able to better connect calculations to concepts. They can use calculators to improve their computation skills and solve math problems efficiently. With a strong understanding of math, students will then be able to visualize the law of conservation of mass when balancing chemical equations and perform various chemical reactions using their stoichiometric calculations. With your help, these new classroom resources will provide the platform of understanding that my students require to connect chemistry to their real-life experiences.

I also plan to have my students read the popular Hidden Figures book and guide them to see that stereotypes and financial opportunities do not limit their ability to become future scientists and leaders of their generation.

As a class, we will understand that science is not restricted to one demographic. Additionally, my students will see the connection between the sciences and the humanities. The Hidden Figures book will be a year-long project that promotes growth, confidence, and resilience in my chemistry classroom. Education is all about equity and providing students who are worthy of a quality education with the resources they need to succeed. My students deserve the opportunity to pursue careers in the sciences and your support can allow this to happen! We are greatly appreciative of your time and cannot wait to learn more!
