Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Mathematics in a school on the South side of Milwaukee. It is an IB school that is one of the best Middle schools in the city. My learners are always eager to learn new mathematics concepts daily and are enthusiastic about their studies. However, a good portion of my students come from low-income households and they qualify to receive free school lunch.

Many of them are faced with the challenges of inadequate classroom supplies with acts as a determent to their love for learning because they do not have what they need to do their classwork effectively.

The situation of the global pandemic has also put them in uncertain situations since some parents will not be able to afford the school supplies due to the rise in unemployment

My Project

Learning mathematics is basically done by writing down problems and solving them. Thus the use of supplies like pens, pencils, paper, folders, and erasers are needed to be able to succeed in learning. In the previous school year, there were several occasions in which I had to purchase extra pencils and papers for my students and I also observed that some students were requesting these supplies regularly.

However, for this school year, my aim is that by the time face-to-face instruction resumes, each of my students should have an individual pouch of classroom supplies that they will be able to use any time they come into the class.

We are also requesting related supplies including a functional pencil sharpener, markers, and so on will also be useful.

Also once physical classes also begin, it will be wonderful to also have a class set of headphones that the students can utilize while doing online instruction in order to minimize distractions. This was also a problem during the previous school year as the ones that could be purchased did not last very long before they were damaged.
