"Success is a journey not a destination." I have spent the first months of school investing my high schoolers in the meaning behind this profound quote. My students have been shown that science is learned through formulas and not exploration. I cannot allow them to graduate believing this is true.
I have about 75 students with a little under 70 of them being seniors and the remaining few juniors.
They attend a charter school that aims to be science-oriented but lacks the resources to make this the reality of the school. Attending a Title 1 school, my students face challenges both in and out of the classroom but find ways to rise above them and come to school everyday knowing and believing in the opportunities a good education can bring them. They are aspiring engineers, politicians, artists, doctors, musicians, and more. Their dreams are limitless and every day I feel honored for the opportunity to not only teach these students, but learn from them as well. Their concerns are that they have not yet been provided the environment where their creativity and curiosity can flourish. Some are the first in their family to go to college and they do not yet feel prepared for the next big step. Through our year together, I intend to ensure that none feel that way on their graduation day.
Being the first physics teacher at my school, when I arrived, there were no resources whatsoever for a physics classroom let alone a physics lab. Through DonorsChoose, I was able to acquire class sets of meter sticks and stopwatches that have been transformational already in giving my students the opportunity for hands-on experiences with our content. However, the ability to take measurements is nothing without having the skills to analyze data. While the real-life applications have been very exciting for them, there is a very detrimental math gap that prevents the connection of our work in labs to our work in lecture from being as clear as it can be. Having a class set of scientific calculators will allow my students to maximize learning and exploration time by being able to quickly and accurately calculate results. This will have a huge impact on my students’ ability to be successful this year and in the following years when they attend college.
My students are exceptional learners with the potential and excitement to be scientists for life.
For them to fully engage in their content, they desperately need the opportunity to use calculators and focus on inquiring about the principles behind projectile motion rather than struggling with multiplying 9.8 x 213 g (for example). This year is essential to their future success and I know the fulfillment of this project will be integral to making that happen. Thank you for your help!
