Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in the 7th grade and I have the pleasure of teaching them the importance of mathematics. It’s a wonderful feeling teaching them the importance of math and how relevant it is to our daily lives. As a teacher, in a low-income/high poverty school district, I know that my students are faced with a plethora of challenges both inside and outside the classroom. So the minute they step into our room I focus on their individual potential and growth.

I hope to inspire my students to be enthused about mathematics and see the value and beauty behind it, and become empowered by the opportunities mathematics gives us.

My seventh graders are intelligent, goal driven, young adults whose experiences should not be hindered based on their socioeconomic status. Instead they should be given the same opportunities and resources that will allow them to thrive inside and outside of the classroom.

All of my students receive free/reduced-price lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Often times, their status may not provide them with the resources many of us see as "standard”. With your help, we can give my students the opportunity to engage with resources to help aid them in being successful in class.

My Project

These TI 30XIIS Scientific calculators will continue to enhance the knowledge within my classroom. My students will have a sense of pride using calculators that they know for a fact work. They will be responsible for using them and maintaining them throughout the year. These materials can be used during group work and independent work. Every student calculator will be placed away and treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to have materials that will push and assist them in class. These materials have been chosen with my students in mind;I have watched them the past few weeks of school either borrowing assistive technologies or having to break down each problem by hand. This will allow them to continue to learn the content and enjoy math overall!

Let’s face it, we live in a society that is always changing based on the advancement of technology.

Technology is huge and learning how to use technology is just as huge, which is why it’s good for students to have an understanding of how to use a calculator. With these new materials, my students will be able to enjoy math all while maintaining responsibility of their own personal calculator. It is a fairly simple instrument to use and students will need to use such devices elsewhere throughout their lives. calculators are something that your students are going to use to set a budget, do their taxes and complete other tasks throughout their lifetimes. It will also be useful for them to calculate their work. If both answers don’t line up students can go back and re-check their work to see where they may have gone wrong. So by having their own calculator it is immensely valuable for validating work.
