My Students

Playing with a calculator is loads of fun, it also means that the students do not have to think about what they are adding or subtracting. That is NOT why we use them, but they still like having them.

I teach K-8 special needs classes of kids who struggle with numbers.

My younger kids, K-2 love to put in the numbers and see what they come up with. They are quite impressed with themselves when they add the numbers and the calculator agrees with them! Kids in grades 3-5 are taught how to use a calculator and are required to use one as part of their curriculum. The 6-8th graders actually need to use one to help with percentages and do some graphing. Our school is a K-8, in rural southeastern North Carolina. Our counties economy is dependent on agriculture, we are one of the largest turkey and hog producers in the USA. We are rather small, less than a 1000 students. My students are identified across the spectrum of special needs, but we try to expose them to as much of the general curriculum as we can so they can have the opportunity to experience all they can.

My Project

Mostly the older students will need and use the calculator, but as I just changed schools my program here does not have calculators for my students. The older ones really need them to be successful in the general education class, and the younger ones need the exposure, as I do hope they will be successful and will be able to participate in the general education classes. Having calculators that are just in my class, and can be loaned out to the student to take to class is invaluable to the student's ego. When they walk into class and have their own calculator that they are familiar with makes them feel like they are truly part of that class.

My students will also have to take the End Of Grade tests, and will need to be familiar and comfortable with a calculators when they take those tests.

My overriding wish to have all of my kids as prepared as they can be to go out and calculate their way through life and all it has to offer them. Thank you for taking the time to visit this website and reading my wish. I hope you can help somebody out!
