My Students

I work as a Middle School Math Teacher in a Title I school where my students have to grow up early since they have lots of responsibilities at home. I see a lot of behavioral and academic problems because of the anger and frustration that they face at home.

I feel for the student knowing that things I take for granted like clean clothes, clothes that fit, home-cooked meals, are things that they consider luxuries.

I am excited to see them view the school and my classroom as a safe place where they are allowed to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes.

My Project

Each student will have his/her dry erase markers and dry erase boards to complete math assignments daily using environmentally friendly materials.

Each student will be assigned a calculator, allowing all 7th and 8th students to be able to effectively learn and grow through the use of technology.

Students will also benefit by being able to use the tools for homework.

The requirements set for cleaning surfaces will be made more efficient with students having materials that are assigned to them rather than shared with the classes as they rotate in and out of the classroom throughout the day.
