My Students

2+2=4, we all know that without having to really work at it. As a special needs teacher sometimes that is difficult for my students to master. I still want them to know those facts or at least be able to use t a number line or fingers!

As students move on up in their level of work they are into square root, integers and positive and negative numbers, this is where a calculator can come in handy.

I teach with a team of two other special needs teachers about 100 students who are identified with different levels of learning and concerns that got with them. Our students are identified as legally blind, autistic, Down's syndrome, medically impaired, wheelchair bound, mildly delayed to behavioral and emotional issues. We work together to give our students the most exposure they can have to the curriculum as dictated by the state. Our school is small, less than 1,000 students in a Pre-K to 8 setting. We are in rural southeastern North Carolina, where agriculture is our major source of or economy. We have no large cities or towns in our county, and the hogs and turkeys out number the people!

My Project

Everybody will have access to the calculators, the older student who are able to be accompanied by one of us, in regular education classes, will take a calculator with them to use in their math class as they study square roots and positive and negative numbers. The younger children who are mastering multiple digit addition or subtraction will use them to check their work, they will, work their problems or worksheet then exchange their pencils for pens and check their work with the calculator. For problems that they get wrong we go over them again with pencil and paper. Sometimes we will let them use them to do their work as they do enjoy having the help. They fell so grown up! So how will this help our students? They too will have a chance to feel like they are part of the class team, they will know how to find the answer and be able to participate successfully in class.

The older kids will be able to do the same work and get the correct answers and offer them in class and proudly say they did the work!

The younger kids will be able to practice and learn their basic facts, and with the early introduction to calculators when they get to the older grades they will be able to show their classmates how to use a calculator, and even in middle school being the first to master something is a big deal. Thank you for visiting this site and thinking about our students.
