Try calculating the value of the literacy rich lives of first grade students...you can't...because it is off the charts! I currently teach a group of 23 first grade students in the fastest growing district in South Carolina. We are a community school where many children can walk and bike each morning and afternoon. The majority of our parents both work, which means less time each afternoon and night for enriched learning.

Literacy is my main focus throughout the day. I fall short when it's time for math instruction. Children are motivated, encouraged, and captivated when I have a new read aloud in hand...no matter what time of day it is. They are comforted by this pastime; of someone reading aloud to them. And it makes a difference. What I don't have are the resources necessary to carry this experience into our math time. There are so many books published for this exact purpose and our new math series even provides the titles that correlate with each lesson and each standard.

I have taken the time to research and compile a list of books I need to best fit the mathematical needs of my students. I know that they would benefit greatly from having this literacy experience carried over into our math time. Counting books, pattern books, number books; the possibilities are endless. Reading these books aloud to my students at the beginning of a new math unit or lesson will grab their attention, and ease them into the new concept with confidence and interest.
