I want my students to be able to explore a world of creative and expressive possibilities. I am the music teacher at an urban elementary school in an underserved, poverty-stricken neighborhood. We are lucky to have a room with seventeen electronic pianos, but have not been able to use it to its full potential.

It gets extremely loud in the keyboard lab, but it's good sound: the sound of engaged, excited children exploring on a real instrument, and making music! Students discover the drum pad setting, and create complex, syncopated rhythms; students figure out how to play the melody "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"; children show their classmates how to bend the pitch, or change the tone to "trumpet", or play a cool riff on the bass keys. Every child enthusiastically tries out the keyboards, but soon their fascination wanes as their senses are overwhelmed with the many sounds bombarding their ears.

If we had a set of headphones to use in the keyboard lab, the children could hear what THEY were playing without having to hear what sounds their neighbors were making. They could focus on what they were learning without being distracted by another's playing, and really focus on their own sound explorations.

My students love to create their own music, and with your help, they would be better able to do just that! You can make it possible for all of my students to have a fun, positive, hands-on experience making their own music.
