This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have the best students in the city! They come to school with so much love to give and such enthusiasm to learn. My school is a Title I school located in Kensington, the center of the opioid crisis in Philadelphia. As the art teacher, I am blessed to not just teach them art but to be able to provide an emotional outlet for them to process and cope with the trauma they survive daily. It has also allowed me to build strong bonds with them and pushes me to want to provide as many experiences and opportunities for them as I can.

My students are eager to create clay sculptures but most of them have never even touched a sculpting medium besides play-doh.

The materials I am requesting will make this dream come true! I am requesting the final pieces that I will need to put together clay cabinets to safely store their work while it is in progress. I currently have one but it is not enough for more than one class at a time. These materials would give us two more sculpture cabinets so that I could do a clay project with an entire grade at a time. This would allow me to rotate and teach a clay unit to all of my students throughout the course of the year.

To see some sculptures created by my fourth graders from last year look at my current class picture attached to this project they're amazing! Clay is a magical medium that most students love and excel at. It is an entirely different experience than drawing, painting, or any other 2D art form. It has always been my favorite and I can't wait to provide this experience for my students.
