Mrs. Knight from Florissant, MO is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Mrs. Knight is requestingMy students need 8 DNA Replication Transcription Sets and 4 DNA Model Kits.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
“Smarter, and Together in the Classroom" the students will excel in learning to become great biologist when they study DNA in a "hands-on" and meaningful way to their learning! DNA is everything they know and what better way then to extract DNA from strawberries and onions!
I have 23 wonderful students, and 4 of them are Autistic, so getting hands on lessons is even more powerful to them.
All my students will benefit from this type of learning. My students are energetic, inquisitive, and very “hands-on” learners. They love learning through a variety of methods, but when given the chance to have hands on they find learning meaningful, worth wild, and can make the real-world connections so much more in-depth. My school is almost 60% free-reduced lunch, however those kids are just as special and great as all the rest. We have earned National School of Character, and we strive to keep those positive behaviors going all year round through Character Education. We have a very involved staff who build positive relationships with peers and staff. My school is amazing, and I wouldn’t choose any other school in my district to work for because of the wonderful support I continuously get from my colleagues.
These resources would impact the learning environment greatly! Just having the kids build the DNA model alone will help students visualize DNA in all living things, however adding the replication and transcription set will add to the students learning more in-depth. Students will create mRNA from each strand, while having full-color booklet for their reference, as well as, having the CD-ROM will help me with more in-depth lessons. My students will then be able to extract DNA from strawberries and onions, which will be amazing for them to see not only how DNA is extracted, but what DNA is after completing the experiments. Students will learn what DNA is and how it plays a huge role in their own inherited traits. What a connection they will make to what seems abstract when we begin, but it will become concrete learning to them! With these “hands-on” learning experiments, students will know what DNA is, how it is extracted in living things, and the role it plays in inherited traits.
I have had the great opportunity to be a member of STOM and work with Washington University in St.
Louis on curriculum, these donations will help my classroom by creating a more in-depth learning experience via using the curriculum and make the learning meaningful to all the students. It will change the students’ lives because the will talk about these lessons for future years and remember this as they go through the upper grades, and be able to connect this learning to their future learning.
