My Students

In my classroom, the students are focused on learning about culinary arts. Our school is home to many Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs that provide opportunities for job preparation after high school. We have a great arts program, as well.

Our school is a large, urban, public high school with almost 2,500 ethnically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse students.

The campus has five small learning communities and is home to our school's Math/Science Magnet. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with a majority of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the area. Our students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Tagalog, and more.

My Project

For the upcoming school year, we are implementing a new baking class. We will need new textbooks and materials in order to do this. This is an advanced level course, and we already have a lot of the hands-on equipment that we will need. The textbook requested, In the Hands of a Baker, was written by the Culinary Institute of America, and we feel that this will be a great basis for learning. The requested Choices magazine will provide students with a look into current topics and further enhance instruction.

The students themselves requested that a baking course be available.

They are very motivated and have a lot of interesting ideas. If we can start out with the basic academic foundations and a class set of books, we will have more funds to spare for buying ingredients and tools. Your donation to this project will help students to explore the world of baking with a hands-on approach.
