Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in an area of low economic development. Over 90% of our students are growing up in poverty. Books and resources are scarce in their homes. But they come to school every day eager to learn and to apply their new skills.

My students love to learn and are full of questions about the world.

We read stories every day and one of my goals for them is to foster a passion for reading and for books. They love getting to know new characters and for many of them, it is their favorite part of the day. My students are the kindest, most curious, and fun class ever!

My Project

Reading is a skill that is important for all subject areas. We want to develop a passion for reading in our students that will stay with them throughout their academic career. Graphic novels are books that are written in a comic book story. They are funny, eye-catching and give our beginning readers enough visuals to keep up with the story.

Even our reluctant readers love these books!

We do an after school club where we read together, discuss the stories and then the students work on their own projects of writing a creative graphic novel of their own. These books like Fashion Kitty, Catstronauts and My Pencil and Me will help inspire our students to read and be creative themselves. Many of our students are learning English as a second language-the pictures in these stories help them understand what they are reading better.

With this project you could help foster a love of learning in our young students.
