This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If they don't have it, it's my job to get it for them... My students are predominately Black and Latinx teens who travel from some of New York City's low-income neighborhoods to our school on the Upper West Side. The journey from their neighborhoods to our school is full of conflict and contrasts. They pass scores of exclusive private schools, zoned schools and screened schools in order attend our unscreened, Title I school. The vast majority of our student population qualifies for a free or reduced-price lunch. They sometimes come to school without the necessary supplies.

There are many factors that could serve to impede the success of my students, however, they consistently push through and persevere.

Every day, they come to school ready to question, ready to learn.

My Project

Schools are preparing for a return to in-person learning- a school return that will look different from any other preceding it. As we return, it is obvious that safety is paramount to the health of all students and faculty that enter our school building. This includes the use of PPE such as masks and face shields. While these items are designed to ensure a safe return for all involved, there is little question that identities are obscured by them.

Our goal is to create for each student and faculty member a button featuring a photo of their smiling and unmasked face.

Some of our students entering the building are freshmen we have never physically met and it is important that we all get to know the faces under the masks in order to foster the community that is so important to the school experience.

I intend to make the button maker a staple in our school following this project. Buttons will be used for school branding as well as student incentives.
