Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What would you prefer? Learning about the butterfly life cycle through a textbook or getting to see them grow and evolve right before your eyes? I think we would both agree that the second option would definitely win.

For many years, I have been teaching my students about the butterfly life cycle with live specimens.

Without fail, it is always a success. Why? Because children are curious about the world and the way things change. They love to explore and ask questions. As a matter of fact, one of the most popular subjects is science. Why? Because they get a chance to explore and experiment with different topics. Although it might seem like simple play, this time of exploration allows them to construct their own knowledge by asking questions and discussing with their partners.

I am requesting live butterfly larvae to make learning about metamorphosis exciting. I know that by having live butterfly larvae, my students will be more excited and take ownership of their learning of the life cycle. In the past, I've been able to provide live larvae in the class. The excitement and engagement soared through the roof. The children were so amazed to get to see a caterpillar morph into a butterfly right before their eyes. Students were excited to learn, and because they were able to make observations on a daily basis, they took ownership of their learning.

I hope that you will be able to once again make learning about butterflies exciting and real.
