Help Mrs. Lenker

I teach second grade at a small elementary school in Los Angeles. We may be a small school but things have been happening thanks to the the local community, parents, and teachers. Our resource teacher and I just designed and planted a 2,000 square foot butterfly garden at our school. Our hope is to attract Monarch butterflies and any other local butterflies by planting the plants that attract them. Our new garden is beautiful and is already attracting butterflies. We even have caterpillars and chrysalids already. Now that we have the garden we are developing a curriculum that encompasses kindergarten through third grade. The children are very excited and visit the garden often searching for caterpillars and butterflies. The teachers at our school will be using this garden to teach lessons on plants, lifecycles, water conservation, and of course butterflies. We plan on using this garden as a spring board to motivate students to write and read about all of the topics listed above. Of course we plan to integrate many areas of math into our butterfly garden. We need materials to help students identify the butterflies that visit our garden. We would also like to bring some of the caterpillars into the classroom so the students can watch them hatch. For that we would like a butterfly tower to keep them in. As teachers we are also looking for activity guides to use as we create and plan our butterfly curriculum. Our students are already very excited to have such a beautiful new garden filled with butterflies. We hope to take advantage of their enthusiasm for our new garden by providing them with a wonderful curriculum that helps us meet our state's teaching standards.
