This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We love having caterpillars in our classroom; we need something to keep them from wandering everywhere!

My class is kindergarten, first and second grade special education.

We currently have 8 students in our class. They are a sweet, inquisitive, and happy bunch! Our school is an inner-city elementary school in Southern California. The entire student body receives free breakfast and lunch.

My Project

On our campus, we have two mulberry bushes. Each spring, mourning cloak butterflies lay their eggs on them. This year, we brought some of the already hatched caterpillars into our classroom for study. The students were able to observe the caterpillars up close and watch their impressive growth from a flower vase. When the caterpillars were about 1.5 inches long, we had a three-day weekend. I left the caterpillars with plenty to eat, but, come Tuesday, the mulberry branches were stripped bare, along with the students' sunflower seedlings that were nearby. The caterpillars were spread out all over the class! We tried to find all of the wayward insects throughout the day, but, unfortunately, some were crushed. Others were found much later as chrysalises in unusual places. While it was an interesting experience for my students, I feel it will be better for the caterpillars to have a stable home to grow in and allow my students better access for observation.

My students greatly enjoy watching caterpillars hatch from eggs, grow and change first into chrysalises, then butterflies.

It enhances their respect and appreciation for other living things and gives them hands-on experience and exposure with the life science curriculum.
