Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We have created a Service Garden at our school with grant funding from Youth Service of America. The garden is there to honor the men and women of service from 9/11 and to encourage service to others in the school, the community and the country. Three of the raised garden beds are dedicated to the first responders (NYFD, NYPD, & EMS). The five trees are dedicated to the branches of the military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, & Coast Guard). There is an outdoor storage box filled with books so students can go to the garden to read and grow.

Three butterfly benches would provide the seating area for students to read books in the HSLEAPS Service Garden.

HSLEAPS is the only school in the country dedicated to service: Public Safety and Law Enforcement. Our unique partnership with the NYPD allows students to take classes like Intro to Law and Forensics. We have the largest Explorers program in the city and other student service groups at the school include the Student Government Association, My Brothers/Sisters Keeper, and Girls On Point. We want to promote literacy, service and sustainability with students as stewards of the HSLLEAPS Service Garden.
