Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Greetings! I am a Teach for America Corps Member working for Alief Independent School District in Houston, Texas. This is my second year teaching, and I teach self-contained ( all subjects) 3rd grade. The following conversation actually occurred in my classroom. Teacher: "Boys and girls, today we are going to be talking about elections." (Teacher displays pictures of candidates running for president that have been cut out of a newspaper; one student looks confused. ) Teacher: "Tiaye, what's wrong?" Student: "Are all those people running for president?" Teacher: "Yes." (Tiaye stands up and points at the picture) Student: "Even that person?" Teacher: "Yes, that's United States Senator Barack Obama. He's running too." Student: "But Miss, black people can't be president!" Teacher: "They most certainly can be! We have a lot of work to do!" I have many more stories similar to the ones above, but I think you get the picture. My students have virtually no background knowledge about the world they live in and what occurs in it. Our current social studies textbook is older than my students and virtually useless in the classroom. My students need and deserve better social studies instruction to be well-informed citizens, and also to prepare for high-stakes standardized tests that often focus on non-fiction reading passages. To help my students, I need your help. I would like to have a class set (30 subscriptions) of "Time Magazine for Kids" to use in my classroom weekly. The magazine has activities that overlap all subject areas, contain current events, and help students practice reading non-fiction text. In closing, the conversation with Tiaye about elections did two things. First, it broke my heart that his background knowledge told him that people who share his skin color could not be president. Yet, secondly, it made me even more determined to help the students I serve understand that anything is possible with hard work and determination. Thank you for your time.
