My Project

My amazing first graders are energetic and wiggly learners. Sometimes, focusing their attention on academics can be challenging. We have tried other fidget tools with limited success. Recently, in our school's maker space, they have learned basic sewing skills. Students who often have trouble focusing reported that keeping their hands busy with sewing increased their ability to stick to a task and stay calm.

Meeting students' social and emotional needs increases their academic engagement.

Having sewing projects to do in the classroom will help my students learn perseverance, problem-solving, and pride in their work. The sewing kits in this project are first-grade friendly because they have pre-punched holes that will allow students to work independently and safely.
