My Students

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle! That's the story of life when you're 3 years old!

Do you tap your foot when you're in a meeting and really ready to go home?

What about chew on your pen when you're really concentrating on a paper or a book you are reading? Imagine feeling this way while you were brushing your teeth or checking out at the grocery store. Your foot isn't trying to dance, but it sure won't stop moving. That pen isn't a toy or a distraction, it's actually helping you work harder. For most preschoolers, getting the wiggles is something that comes and goes. Young children are able to begin to decipher times to sit and times to play. But for some children, it is exceptionally hard. Learning to sit still and pay attention can be a very frustrating, painful experience for young children with special needs.

My Project

My students need various supplies like squeeze balls and tactile discs to help them prepare their bodies and their senses to be ready to listen and learn. These supplies will give my students with special needs the supports they require to learn how to sit and attend to lessons, to calm down when frustrated, and to gain the sensory input they are seeking to be able to pay attention. My students are eager to learn and ready to work. But they often lack the ability to pay attention or focus due to the fact that their bodies are not cooperating with their brains.

Fidgets, wiggle seats, swings, and other sensory materials will help my children calm their busy hands while they pay attention or listen during group work.

These are not toys. They are supports. And they give my students an appropriate outlet for movements that often come out in seemingly inappropriate ways (or at inappropriate times). Your donation will put the supports children need to become engaged with learning into a classroom serving 3-5 year old students with special needs.
