My Students

My students are kindergarteners at a Title 1 school. These young learners arrive to the classroom from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. More than half of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches.

Despite these challenges, my students are no less eager to discover the world around them.

Students are encouraged to try new things that will expand their knowledge through academics, movement, and social interactions in a safe environment.

With the projects, I hope to offer opportunities that stretch the kindergarteners' minds and bodies. Our young learners need to move and have hands-on experiences as they grow and learn together in the classroom. Learning can be fun!

My Project

A room full of kindergartners is a busy place to be - they are on the move and curious to understand the world around them! I see a need for supplies to help them focus their brains and calm their bodies when they have trouble succeeding by themselves. Lap pillows, stretchy bands and a stretchy blanket are tools that will help the students focus bodies and leave their minds ready to explore in a safe, secure environment.

Students can use materials from this project that encourage an "expression of individual creativity" and a formation of community as they are learning.

The Teachers Pet is a weighted lap pillow that offer support on the lap to help students gain control of their moving bodies. The "pets" are a friendly way to allow students to be comforted and allow them to focus on a task that requires sitting in one spot in a small or large group setting. Fidgety and unwanted behaviors can be controlled independently as students choose to use this tool. ShapeShifters are a set of 6 stretchy bands that students can manipulate individually or with partners to create geometric shapes, letters, and much more. Finally, the Co-OperBlanket involves "cooperative movement". Up to 12 students can move inside the stretchy blanket. Activities using these tools require concentration, critical thinking, and cooperate learning.

I look forward to what ideas the kids come up with for ways to use the materials. Bodies can be busy and minds ready to explore and be curious about their world.
