Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you had your own new book? The joy and excitement you experienced from knowing it was your own book? Imagine being 6 years old and being allowed to buy a book from Barnes & Noble. For my students this will be the first time they visit Barnes & Noble.

I am a 1st grade teacher in a shortage school in New York.

About 98% of our students receive free lunch, which means that their income is below the poverty line. The majority of the students in our school are below grade level. I have 28 wonderful first graders who have various academic needs. However they are eager to come to school and learn. They are highly motivated and want to learn despite the many difficulties that surround them. I enjoy coming to work and teaching my eager students.

My Project

My students enjoy learning to read. My school is highly under-resourced. Many of my students do not have access to books outside of school. As a result, reading is not a natural part of their lives outside of school. Inside my classroom, my students love to read. They do so eagerly during school and often borrow books from my classroom library to take home. To help make reading a part of my students' lives outside of school, I would like to give my students the experience of shopping for their very own books. I am planning a field trip to a local Barnes & Noble store. There, they will tour the different sections and learn how to choose books for themselves. This experience will introduce my students to the warm and inviting bookstore environment and give them the tools to bring reading into their own lives.

I would also like to be able to present them with a gift card with which they will purchase books of their very own.

Hopefully this experience will encourage them to return often to bookstores and perhaps bring their friends and family members too. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
