My Students

Every day in my transition program, my students work on strengthening their independence for life after high school. For my moderate/severe special education Juniors and Seniors, opportunities to practice real life skills, vocational skills, and communication can lead to a stronger, brighter future!

My students are high school Juniors and Seniors with moderate/severe special education needs.

They are looking forward to their future and focusing on gaining the skills they need to be successful adults. In order to learn valuable skills they need the opportunity to practice "hands on," so my class has started a Micro Enterprise called "Tacos On Wheels." The students provide a lunch delivery service to staff by taking orders, counting cash, giving change, placing orders, and delivering. They learn valuable job skills like responsibility, time management, money handling, organization, social skills, and communication. The staff love having the students come around and always encourage them!

My Project

The resources I have requested will enable my students to organize their daily work and resources to make information more accessible and to give each student an individualized portfolio. The binders, page separators, and sheet protectors will be used to help the students keep track of the business materials such as: cash drawer reconciliations, menus, order forms, receipts, and other business forms. They will also use the binders to carry any individualized visuals or supports they need such as: visual schedules, scripts or written prompts, or checklists with steps to complete. The cash boxes will enable my students to be responsible for counting and keeping track of the business money and being able to exchange money with customers. The stamp is going to be used to organize receipts, stamp received orders, and mark paid orders. The Vinyl binder pockets will allow students to carry pencils, highlighters, calculators, and cash box keys in their binder so they are always prepared.

Many of my students struggle with organizational skills and the ability to prepare their needed materials in one place so that they can effectively use what is available to them.

It is important to teach them how to organize themselves so that they feel supported and capable! By providing the students with these simple tools, we can enable them to focus on the task in front of them and reduce the confusion and stress. It is amazing how a little preparation can make a big difference!
