I teach at Logansport Learning Academy which is an alternative school for Logansport High School. Our school focuses on helping dropout risk students graduate. Our student body qualifies for 47% free and reduced lunch. For this reason, my business math class focuses on learning how to be successful with your personal finances and achieving a good career in the hope of breaking the cycle of poverty. My students are studying the power of investing for the future at a young age. We look at a scenario where someone can save $2000 a year between the ages of 19 and 26, never add another dime, never touch the money, and they end up with 2.2 million dollars at retirement! The purpose of this activity is to emphasize the importance of paying yourself first through savings by setting a financial goal. Students create a decorated picture frame for a $1 bill. This $1 bill is the first dollar they will save toward a 1 million dollar retirement. They will search for inspirational quotes and decorate the frame to represent their goal. Creative decorations will be encouraged! Students will then present their decorated frame to the class describing the quote and other decorations and how that relates to their 1 million dollar goal! We need 5 in. by 7 in. picture frames and craft supplies for decorating. The students supply the first dollar toward their goal. Look at the supply list to see if you want to help with this exciting activity!
