This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
In our Advisory time a huge lesson that our students are learning is about the impact that Hurricane Helene had on families, students, and schools. Collectively Burley has decided that we want to help. So we have adopted OMS in North Carolina whose students have lost everything and try to give them a small sense of normalcy.
These students and their families managed to get away with only the clothes on their backs.
When asked how our school can best support them, their answer was, "Clothes, we desperately need clothes." The basic essentials that our students often take for granted, these students are pleading for.
In adopting this school and sponsoring a Clothing Drive it is showing our students here at Burley that a community is not just where we live, it's helping those that need help. It is teaching a sense of appreciation that it could be us one day and we would want others to help us. With your donation we are able to just start the clothing drive with the basics of socks and hoodies as they start to rebuild their lives. Our students are working hard and learning all about what it means to give back and this initiative is showing them that an area similar to where they live everyday is going through something and needs help from their fellow school community.
