Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been working at my school for 5 years now, and each one has been better than the last. It is currently the middle of the summer, and I cannot wait to get back to work. My students are passionate about learning and creating a better life for themselves.
The vast majority of our students come from low-income households, and many live in shelters or broken homes.
However, this does not stop them from being their best selves. The attendance at my school is routinely top 2 or 3 in our district, as students, staff, administration, and families work together to achieve a passion for learning and a community of caring and trust in one another.
As the reputation of my school continues to grow in a positive direction, the enrollment has increased. As the school grows, we need to continue to show our students that they are cared for, and that they are in a place that is constantly evolving to the needs of the individual learner.
My Project
When I arrived at my school in 2014, there was no Volleyball program. We started with a couple of scrimmages against a neighboring school, a few students from each grade (6-8) showing interest, and an opportunity for students to see something in themselves that they didn't know they had. Eventually, I found a league for our team to join, more and more students showed up for tryouts, and a large group of students began showing up to the gym during lunch every single day to practice.
The team would use the basketball uniforms during games, an old beat-up ball that was used during PE class, and a net that we would roll out on wheels.
However, they would soon come to realize that even though the other teams may have had official uniforms, balls and nets, it was our passion and love of the game that would make us a successful team. Little by little, I would love to repay the students for their dedication to building our program with some of that official equipment. This donation would be the first step.
