My Students

I have always been blessed with students who love and appreciate each other. However, bullying is a real issue. There are no quick fixes or one-size-fits-all solutions. I believe it is easier to be proactive than reactive.

School is currently not in session, but in years past I have had 27 kind, active, hard-working students.

The parents and community are both very supportive of our students, teachers, and school. My school is the intermediate school (4th and 5th grade) for the newly formed Alabaster City Schools system. I would love to begin the year with these books and lessons.

My Project

Last week, I attended a professional development session led by Lester Laminack and Reba Wadsworth. Their session was so inspiring that I bought the book immediately. As mentioned above, I have not had a problem with bullying in my classroom. I want to stay proactive by teaching kindness with lessons revolving around these picture books. I want my students to continue to have a safe environment in which to learn, but I also wish to consider their futures. Fifth grade is right before middle school. Middle school can be rough. I want them to have the confidence to stand up for themselves and others. I want them to know how to resolve conflict peacefully.

The books will be used for whole group lessons and guided conversations.

Students will also be able to read them at their leisure. I will use these picture books for many years. I also plan on using the picture books and my copy of the teacher guide with other teachers at my school.
