Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In today's high-tech society, the economic gap keeps growing and schools such as ours are increasingly at a disadvantage, limiting us from investing in essential teaching tools, such as technology and computers.

I teach 24 enthusiastic third-graders, many who are English Language Learners who often do not understand academic concepts in the classroom because they lack the language skills, cultural background and various other tools to fully comprehend everything they encounter in class.

There is nothing better for these students than presenting visuals and realia to them. Additionally, our school serves a low-socioeconomic neighborhood where parents do not often have the luxury of exposing their children to cultural institutions that may expand their world view, allowing them to grown intellectually, linguistically and culturally. Our school is full of enthusiastic learners and using technology in the classroom would not only feed their love for learning, it would also facilitate it. Technology allows instant transition between text and media, allowing kids to make connections instantly. Media has increasingly become the language of today's youth, we must use this reality to our advantage.

My Project

We need a tablet computer to hook up to a projector so that we can instantly access video/pictures in class. When discussing bullying, for example, some students do not know they are being bullied, and some bullies don't even realize that they are being bullies. With a tablet, I can access children's anti bullying videos and explicitly show the manifestations and consequences of bullying, leading to a more in-depth discussion. Some students do not always open up easily. Having a tablet to keep electronic journals will help timid students open up via writing. Moreover, a tablet can really open up countless possibilities for all subject matter. If we were studying volcanoes, for example, it'd be wonderful to see a colored, detailed, labeled picture of its anatomy on a huge overhead image, and then instantly look at footage of an erupting volcano. When I try doing something like that with our computer, it seems to run on two settings: 1. frustratingly-slow and, 2.frozen.

Visuals and realia help ALL of my students in general, and not only my ELLs.

There is nothing better than taking an unknown concept, whether new or abstract, and provide a visual for it to better make understand it. This allows students to make meaningful connections, while making the process interesting, fun and exciting. This, in turn, will help keep students interested and motivated to perform up to their full potential, paving the road to a successful academic career.
