My Students

The children that we serve are predominantly low-income, with 85% qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. Nestled in southern Harlem, our small school serves nearby children who live in the neighborhood and children who commute. Our students are energetic, creative, and hard-working.

We are a school that includes hands-on projects and units of study into our curriculum.

We believe students learn best when engaged in a rich, inquiry-based curriculum and are offered opportunities to express their learning and knowledge through different modalities. This year, we are teaching in a remote and blended-remote learning environment. Teachers have to be creative to find ways to integrate units of study into the reading and writing curricula and meet students' needs at home, at school, and as they transition back and forth.

My Project

This year, to reach all of our first-grade students- whether they are learning at home, at school, or both- we will teach our activism unit of study through literacy during Black History Month and Women's History Month. In the "Building Young Activists" unit, students will read, study, and listen to biographies of influential people and understand their stories during the civil rights movement of United States history (the 1950s-1970s), using the books requested in this project. Through these stories of civil rights activists, students will begin to learn writing to make the change. Students will identify problems in their classrooms, school, community, and world and learn ways to solve those problems through writing. Students will write letters, hang signs, write books, form petitions, give speeches, sing songs, and make posters for marches as a means to advocate for change. Students will learn how to address a targeted audience and be convincing while being inspired through books of those who already did so.

By studying historical change-makers represented in these books and learning how to advocate for change through writing, first graders will begin to learn the activism process.

The books in this project will inspire students and teach them about great leaders who made changes in big ways and smaller ways, who stood up when people said sit down, and who saw problems in their community and found ways to solve them. Students themselves will learn to solve problems in ways that are meaningful to them, whether it's advocating for more materials in their classrooms, convincing others to wear their masks, writing letters to local community organizations, or organizing marches. In learning to be activists, students can teach others and be life long change-makers.
