Building Water Filters - An Iterative Engineering Experience

My Project

The materials in this project will allow my students to use their deepest thinking skills to solve a problem on which our world is constantly working: How can we provide fresh water to those in need? Students will learn about the scarcity of water, their own water footprint, how water is involved in all four of our Earth's spheres, how to clean groundwater pollution, and the impact humans have on the Earth all while participating in the Engineering Design Process.

My students are inquisitive 5th graders looking to bring justice to the world.

They will be reading A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park alongside this science unit. In the memoir, students are introduced to the idea that children their age are responsible for collecting water for their families even today. My students will see the injustice in the world and the hope is that it will ignite a spark in some students that may impact them for a lifetime.
